UAE plans to stop using plastic bags by 2013

The Ministry of Environment and Water of the UAE (Ministry of Environment and Water, MOEW) announced its intention to completely ban the use of plastic bags in the country by 2013 in order to reduce the amount of waste produced by the country.

According to the ministry, in 2008, two billion plastic bags were produced in the United Arab Emirates, which cannot be reused or disposed of. After use, all these packages are simply thrown into landfills. In this regard, MOEW aims to do everything possible so that by 2013 all residents of the country will use either paper bags or packages that are naturally biodegradable.

According to Maryam Al-Shenashi, executive director of MOEW's technical department, the ministry also plans to extend a ban on the use of other plastic products in the country, such as drinking plastic bottles and food packaging.
