Emirates Airlines seeks expansion of cooperation with flydubai

To avoid competition on some routes and achieve the synergy effect, two airlines from the United Arab Emirates - Emirates and flydubai - can expand cooperation on the initiative of the first.

Emirates, a UAE carrier, is considering expanding cooperation with the flydubai low-cost airline as part of cost optimization in the aviation market.

Emirates Chairman Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum said the Dubai-based airline could seek greater synergies in terms of fleet and flydubai routes.

Answering a question about whether Emirates is considering the purchase of a narrow-body vessel, especially in the face of increasing competition in the long-distance international transportation market, Sheikh Ahmed noted that two Dubai airlines have B777, B737 and A380 aircraft. Given that two carriers are increasingly competing with each other on the same routes, closer cooperation between them really makes sense.

He said: “Sometimes competition is necessary, but sometimes we need to work to expand joint activities.”

Emirates and flydubai have already entered into an interline agreement that allows carriers to make connections between their flights, but since most Emirates aircraft are larger, wide-body, the carrier's activity on many routes in the Middle East and the CIS, in particular in Russia and Eastern Europe, is limited.

Sheikh Ahmed did not comment on the likelihood of a complete takeover of flydubai by Emirates.
