In the UAE, a foreigner will be sent to prison for usury

A foreigner is sentenced to imprisonment, fine and deportation from the United Arab Emirates for usury.

In the UAE, a man of Asian descent was sentenced to three months in prison and fined 100 thousand dirhams ($ US 27.2 thousand) for usury. He will be deported after the end of the prison term.

The Court of Appeal of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah found that a foreigner is guilty of lending to a number of individuals at high interest rates.

One of the witnesses told the court that the man granted her mother several loans in the amount of 60 thousand dirhams ($ US 16.3 thousand), and after that he took 200 thousand dirhams ($ US 54.4 thousand), including credit and interest.

Another woman told the court that the moneylender demanded 285 thousand dirhams ($ US 77.6 thousand) from her after issuing her 115 thousand dirhams ($ US 31.3 thousand). Three more people spoke in court, using the services of the accused.
