The date of the first cosmonaut from the United Arab Emirates entering the Earth’s orbit

The first astronaut from the United Arab Emirates will be in Earth orbit this fall.

On February 25, 2019, employees of the Muhammad bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC) confirmed that the first cosmonaut from the United Arab Emirates will realize his dream and will go into space on September 25, 2019. One of the two emirates - Hazza Al Mansouri or Sultan Al Neyadi - will enter orbit for an eight-day flight as part of the Russian mission, visit the International Space Station (ISS) and return to Earth on October 3, 2019.

Both cosmonauts underwent rigorous training in Russia. They coped with the task of survival in the conditions of the Russian winter at the Cosmonaut Training Center named after Yu.A. Gagarin in the suburbs. During the training, they learned how to get out of a damaged capsule, build shelters, use available resources and communications.

An astronaut from the UAE will conduct an ISS study of the reaction of vital indicators of the human body before and after a flight. The results of this work will later be compared with studies conducted by astronauts from other regions. In addition, the Emirate astronaut will conduct a tour of the ISS in Arabic and demonstrate the structure of the station.

“For the first time, an Arab astronaut will go to the ISS. This will allow Arab youth to strive for the repetition of the achievements of their ancestors who have excelled in science, mathematics, and especially in astronomy,” said Yusuf Ahmad Al Shaibani, MBRSC CEO, “This step also confirms the emirates’s desire and their determination to realize the vision of the wise leadership of the UAE.
