Sir Bu Nair, pearl-shaped, is located in the Persian Gulf, 112 km from the coast of Sharjah. It became the second territory of the emirate, after the al-Ghafiyah mangroves in Kalba, which came under international protection. There are 40 species of coral in the coastal waters of the island, in which 76 species of reef fish live, including seven unique ones. Also, the island, having an area of 300 hectares, is a nesting site for bisse turtles and Aden gulls.
The inclusion of the island in the Ramsar Convention will ensure the preservation of its natural beauty. Currently, the convention is protected by more than two thousand wetlands around the world.
