Dubai will create pedestrian eco-crossings

Dubai Municipality has announced its intention to create Eco Walks indoor walkways for pedestrians and passengers using the subway. Transitions leading to the Dubai metro stations will create shade and cool with the help of solar energy. The conceptual design of Eco Walks was unveiled at the recent Cityscape Global international real estate exhibition.

According to the official representative of the Dubai municipality, the final decision on when exactly the new pedestrian crossings will begin to be built has not yet been made. According to Hussein Nasser Luta, Director General of the Dubai Municipality, last June, the main goal of the Eco Walks project is to fully utilize solar energy and create a comfortable zone for pedestrian flow, especially in the summer and other hot months of the year.

To implement the project, special umbrellas will be installed on the walkways, as well as shading and cooling fans that reduce the temperature. In addition, there will also be refrigerators with drinking water and automated teller machines operating with the help of solar modules installed on umbrellas. “These umbrellas will be used not only for cooling, but also as devices for advertising,” Luta said. “This initiative of the municipality aims to promote sustainable development by using alternative and environmentally friendly energy of green transport, as well as improving conditions for pedestrians as they move to the Dubai Metro stations
